Understanding Your Situation

When You Need Answers About Your Whole Abdomen and Pelvis

Persistent abdominal discomfort, bloating, or pelvic pain can be deeply unsettling -- particularly when symptoms seem to come and go without explanation. A combined abdominal and pelvic scan gives you a thorough assessment of all the key organs in one sitting, so you leave with a complete picture rather than a partial one. Our specialist sonographers at 29 Weymouth Street deliver detailed findings and a written report the same day.

Clinical Overview

What is an Abdominal and Pelvic Scan?

An abdominal and pelvic ultrasound scan combines two complementary assessments into a single examination. The abdominal component evaluates the liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, and pancreas, while the pelvic component assesses the uterus, ovaries, and bladder. Together they cover the most common sources of lower abdominal and pelvic symptoms in women. The scan uses high-frequency sound waves and is entirely non-invasive with no radiation exposure.

What Happens During Your Scan

1

Arrival and preparation

Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Our reception team will welcome you and confirm your details before your appointment.

2

Abdominal assessment

The sonographer applies warm gel to your abdomen and uses a transducer to systematically assess the liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, and pancreas.

3

Pelvic assessment

The transducer moves to the lower abdomen to assess the uterus, ovaries, and bladder. You may be asked to empty your bladder partway through for optimal views.

4

Real-time discussion

Your sonographer will explain key findings during the scan and answer your questions in plain language.

5

Written report

A detailed written report is prepared and provided to you before you leave, with images and clinical recommendations.

Before Your Appointment

How to Prepare for Your Scan

  • 1
Drink 1 litre of water one hour before your appointment and do not empty your bladder -- a full bladder is essential for pelvic views
  • 2
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen
  • 3
Avoid eating a heavy meal for 4 hours before the scan to reduce bowel gas that can obscure abdominal views
  • 4
Continue any prescribed medications as normal unless advised otherwise
  • 5
Bring any previous scan reports or relevant medical letters for reference
After Your Scan

Understanding Your Combined Scan Results

Your sonographer will discuss the key findings with you immediately after the scan. A comprehensive written report covering both the abdominal and pelvic findings is provided before you leave. Normal results provide valuable reassurance. Where abnormalities are identified -- such as fibroids, cysts, or gallstones -- the report will include measurements, characteristics, and recommended next steps to share with your GP or specialist.
