Understanding Your Situation

Abdominal and Urinary Symptoms — Answered in One Appointment

When you have symptoms affecting both your abdomen and urinary system — pain, bloating, changes in urination, or abnormal blood tests — it can be difficult to know where the problem lies. Our combined Abdomen & Urinary Tract Scan assesses all the relevant organs in a single appointment, providing a comprehensive picture of your abdominal and urological health without the need for multiple separate scans. Located at 29 Weymouth Street, Marylebone, our clinic provides same-day diagnostic ultrasound with written reports.

Clinical Overview

What is an Abdomen & Urinary Tract Scan?

This combined scan assesses the upper abdominal organs (liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, and aorta) together with the complete urinary tract (both kidneys, ureters where visible, and bladder). It provides a comprehensive evaluation of the most common causes of abdominal and urinary symptoms in a single, efficient appointment. The scan is painless, radiation-free, and produces immediate results.

Diagnostic Scope

What This Scan Can Detect

Liver & Gallbladder Pathology
Fatty liver disease, gallstones, gallbladder polyps, bile duct dilatation, and liver lesions that may require further investigation.
Kidney Stones & Hydronephrosis
Renal calculi causing pain and haematuria, and associated collecting system dilatation indicating obstruction.
Renal Cysts & Masses
Cysts classified by Bosniak criteria, and solid renal masses requiring further characterisation with CT or MRI.
Bladder Pathology
Bladder wall thickening, bladder stones, post-void residual urine, and bladder masses requiring further investigation.
Aortic Aneurysm
Measurement of the abdominal aorta to screen for aneurysmal dilatation — a potentially life-threatening condition if undetected.

What Happens During Your Scan

1

Preparation check

Your sonographer will confirm your fasting status and symptoms, and explain the two-part scan process (full bladder first, then post-void).

2

Upper abdominal assessment

With you lying on your back, the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, and aorta are systematically assessed.

3

Renal assessment

Both kidneys are assessed in supine and lateral positions, measuring size and assessing for stones, cysts, hydronephrosis, and masses.

4

Full bladder assessment

The bladder is assessed with a full bladder for wall thickness, stones, and masses, and bladder volume is measured.

5

Post-void residual

You will be asked to urinate and return for a final scan to measure post-void residual urine volume. A written report is provided before you leave.

Before Your Appointment

How to Prepare for Your Scan

  • 1
Fast for 4–6 hours before the scan (water is permitted and encouraged)
  • 2
Drink 500ml of water 30 minutes before your appointment — arrive with a full bladder
  • 3
Do not urinate until after the bladder assessment part of the scan
  • 4
Wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen
  • 5
Allow 45–60 minutes for your appointment including discussion time
After Your Scan

Understanding Your Abdomen & Urinary Tract Scan Results

Your sonographer will explain all findings immediately after the scan. A written report covering all organs assessed is provided before you leave. Normal findings provide comprehensive reassurance across all the key abdominal and urological organs. Any abnormalities are clearly described with their clinical significance and recommendations for follow-up or further investigation.
