What is a Thyroid & Neck Scan?

A Thyroid & Neck Scan is a detailed ultrasound examination that visualises the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, and the lymph nodes in the neck. This scan helps evaluate the size, structure, and any abnormalities within these vital organs and surrounding tissues.

Diagnostic Scope

What This Scan Can Detect

Thyroid Nodules
Benign or malignant growths within the thyroid gland, affecting approximately 50% of adults by age 60 in the UK. Ultrasound helps characterise their size, number, and features.
Goitre
An abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, which can be diffuse or nodular. It affects around 5-10% of the UK population and can impact breathing or swallowing.
Thyroiditis
Inflammation of the thyroid gland, often causing pain and tenderness. Conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis are common, affecting about 2% of the UK population.
Parathyroid Gland Abnormalities
Disorders of the parathyroid glands, such as adenomas, which can lead to hyperparathyroidism and affect calcium levels. These are less common but important to detect.
Cervical Lymphadenopathy
Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, which can indicate infection, inflammation, or malignancy. Ultrasound helps assess their size, shape, and internal structure.
